Gillingham travel to the Madejski Stadium tonight looking to give some of the squad’s young stars a shot at the first team.

The League Cup draw has pitched Gillingham against Championship side Reading – a tough draw.

But Gills boss Adrian Pennock is likely to use the match to give a number of his younger squad players a runout, while allowing some of his first-choice starters some time to recover from Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Doncaster.

Centre half Alex Lacey is on the road to recovery after picking up an injury in pre-season, but isn’t expected to start tonight, while skipper Lee Martin (cut knee) and Billy Bingham (sore foot) may also sit this one out to avoid any further injury complications.

Speaking to the Kent Messenger, Gills boss Pennock said: “Reading are a good side and maybe it might give others the opportunity who have not been involved or have been on the bench to give them a go.”

It means we could be set to see some of Gillingham’s young guns in action, with the likes of Greg Cundle, Ben Chapman and Noel Mbo all potentially in line for a call-up to the starting XI.
