Gillingham have moved to further strengthen their defensive options with the signing of former Crewe Alexandra centre half Ben Nugent.
The 24-year-old arrives at Priestfield on a one-year deal having been released by Alexandra in the summer and helps add to boss Adrian Pennock’s permutations at the back following the permanent summer signings of Luke O’Neill, Gabriel Zakuani and Alex Lacey, plus the loan acquisition of Connor Ogilvie.
Pennock said Nugent’s arrival will provide some much-needed competition in the heart of the Gills’ back line.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “I’m very pleased to get Ben on board; he provides good competition in the centre of defence.
“We’re a little bit short on centre backs and with Ben it’s a case of he does what it says on the tin.
“He’s a winner, he’s played a lot of games in the league and he’s the type of character we need.”

And after finding himself without a club as the season kicked off, Nugent is happy to have signed on the dotted line to become the club’s latest new arrival.
“I spoke to the manager a couple of weeks ago and he invited me in to come and train,” he explained.
“Thankfully he liked what he saw and I’m glad to have signed.”
