Gillingham picked up their first win of the campaign at the sixth time of asking with a 2-1 win over Southend United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

A first-half Josh Parker strike gave the Gills the lead, only for the visitors to pull level before the break through Stephen McLaughlin.

And, following a superbly-struck free kick from Darren Oldaker, Shrimpers’ centre half Anton Ferdinand put through his own net to score a decisive own goal and hand the Gills their first win of the season.

New centre-half acquisition Ben Nugent started in the heart of the Gills’ defence and impressed, earning the Man of the Match honours for his debut performance in a Gills shirt.

New goalkeeping signing Steve Arnold also made his Gillingham debut, but his reward was less pleasant, as he finished the game with a suspected broken nose.

Gillingham team vs Southend

Arnold, O’Neill, Ehmer, Nugent, Ogilvie (Simpson 80), Parker, Hessenthaler, Oldaker, Wagstaff (Byrne 90), Cundle (List 70), Wilkinson.

Unused subs: Holy, Lacey, Chapman, Eaves.
