Gillingham’s winless start to the League One season stretched to five games following a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to in-form Shrewsbury Town.

Gillingham started the match in a 4-4-2 lineup with Scott Wagstaff earning his first league start of the season wide on the right of midfield, with Ben Nugent making his league debut in the heart of the Gills’ defence.

But two first-half strikes from the Shrews took the wind out of the Gills before the break, with finishes from Carlton Morris (30′) and Alex Rodman (37′) providing a mountain that proved too much for the Gills to climb.

Josh Parker came off the bench to give the home fans a glimmer of hope when he headed a Scott Wagstaff cross in off the post with 14 minutes remaining, but the home side were unable to find an equaliser as the Gills failed to register a home win at the fifth time of asking.
