Gillingham dropped to 23rd in League One with a 2-1 home reverse against fellow basement-dwellers Northampton Town on a blustery day at Priestfield.
Danny Powell’s 25-yard stunner on the stroke of halftime gave the visitors a lead they didn’t deserve after a solid opening 45 minutes was undone right at the end of the half.
And while Lee Martin netted an equaliser to bring the Gills back into the contest just after the hour mark, as the Priestfield crowd started to believe they could get a come-from-behind win for the first time this season.
But Matt Grimes’ free-kick with 17 minutes to go dampened the mood as the Cobblers man’s set piece hit both posts en route to the net as the Gills fell to defeat once again.
That defeat saw Northampton leapfrog Gillingham in the table and push the Gills down to 23rd out of 24 in the League One table.
The next test for Steve Lovell and his Gills side will see the team travel to Rotherham United next weekend desperate to get back to winning ways once again.
