Gillingham’s summer rebuilding continued on Tuesday with the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Josh Rees from Bromley.

Rees arrives at the club on a two-year contract after an impressive stint with The Ravens that saw him net 20 goals from midfield in 54 appearances for the club.

Now the former Arsenal trainee arrives at Priestfield looking to take his goalscoring exploits up to League 1 level with the Gills.

Rees is looking to prove his worth as a Football League-level player after a promising youth career failed to translate to a regular spot in an EFL side.

He started his career in the Arsenal academy, then joined the Nottingham Forest youth setup in 2013, making his first-team debut in 2014.

However, that was the only Football League appearance of his career, as he was later loaned out, first to Nuneaton, then Torquay, where he found his feet as a regular.

A move to Chelmsford City saw him rack up a half-century of league appearances for The Clarets before he joined Bromley in June last year, where he found his scoring touch, netting 16 times in the league.

“Once the manager showed interest I was set on coming here,” enthused Rees following his signing.

“It’s a good club with solid foundations in this league.

“I’m at a good age, I’ve worked hard to get back to where I wanted to be and this is a great club to be at.”

And Gills manager Steve Lovell told the club’s official website that he was happy to add a talented young midfielder with an eye for goal to his squad ahead of the coming campaign.

“Josh is a player I have had my eye on for some time now,” he admitted.

“He’s quick, confident in possession and is always looking to get forward.

“He played a pivotal part in Bromley’s successes last season, he was one of the highest scoring midfielders in the country and we are very much looking forward to working with him.”
