Gillingham were eliminated on penalties at Millwall, but the players hailed their travelling support after the game

Gillingham’s League Cup campaign only lasted one round, but it further strengthened the bond between the players and the fans after another encouraging performance.

A slightly tweaked Gills lineup took on Championship side Millwall at The Den in the first round of the EFL Cup.

And after 90 goalless minutes in South Bermondsey, the match went straight to penalties – a legacy of the new EFL Cup rules that have done away with extra time in games.

Sadly for the Gills, it wasn’t to be as they lost 3-1 on spot-kicks to send them back to Kent having been eliminated from the competition.

But the 560-strong travelling contingent gave the disappointed Gills players plenty to be positive about after their midweek cup exit, and a number of them took to social media to pay tribute to the fans for their support.
